Bringing Smart, Sustainable Technology to Valparaiso, Indiana

We recently spoke to Beth Shrader, the Planning and Transit Director for the City of Valparaiso, Indiana, to learn how Soofa Signs help the city better connect to their community and support their sustainable initiatives.

Valparaiso is a growing community located in northwest Indiana, 50 miles southeast of Chicago. The city is home to over 32,000 residents and acts as a hub for an additional 15,000 living in surrounding areas.

Valparaiso received recognition from the American Planning Association's (APA) "Great Public Places" award in 2016 for its 2.5 acre downtown park and pavilion. The project transformed an underused parking lot into a vibrant gathering space, and made downtown Valparaiso a regional destination.

In 2021, Valparaiso installed six Soofa Signs around the city, one being on the University of Valparaiso campus. Their goal with Soofa Signs is to better communicate with students, families, and visitors and share public information like weather, Facebook updates, air quality, local events and more.

Shrader mentioned that, “If I were selling it to another community, I’d say that the overall design, the slimness, the solar, and the customization are the best features of Soofa Signs.”
